With our clever client we turned this little old cottage inside out. The old bedrooms became the living spaces, up on the lane and now giving the old girl a dignity within the public realm. In the centre of the plan we made the old living spaces a court, anchored by the now external fireplace and chimney. And out the back, the former patio contains bathing spaces and bedrooms, quiet and private.

The resultant thinness in the plan, with the sun slanting in from the court behind and the timber privacy screen in front, allows a fantastic layering and only the sense of a presence within. This is a fantastic and generous way of being in the public domain, private but engaged.

Way back when we were students we travelled up to Brisbane to see the way another house had done a similar thing.
